A game changing year for racing in Singapore that started with all horses being raised five rating points, adjustments to feature races distances and programming, with the promise of a return to international racing in 2019.

There were also prize money reductions, a new ‘non premier’ division added to Class 4’s and few jockeys - including multiple champion Manny Nunes - not being relicensed, which certainly changed the punting landscape.

The Kranji Mile (moved to May) did become an international invitational with a fair increase in prize money, but it was the Hong King raiders (again) that took home the major slice of that pie.

But for all the changes – including a new stipendiary chief (Terry Bailey) midyear – the racing and punting went on with little or no interruption and exotics players even got the bonus of a $30,000 injection to feature race quartets.

So how did we – the Kranjiracing.com tipsters - fare?

Whip Hand got off to a flyer with 20 winners in January but Robpayback was the man with the money in the bank with total dividends of $1507 and wins divs of $573 at an average of $41 – not bad.

February wasn’t as kind to Whip Hand or Rob but Suresh showed he was in for a big 2018 with 19 winners in the shortest month of the year and our man in Malaysia – with a soft spot for Arexevan horses – also topped the overall and win dividends for the month.

Suresh continued to find winners in March with 18 although it was no clean sweep with old mate mangocharlie topping the overall dividends ladder with $1473 and davidliew188 showing he was a punter to be reckoned with in 2018 with his tally of $485 from 17 winners enough to salute in the win dividend category.

But April was the month that really shaped the Kranjiracing punting competition year.

As we have come to expect, U1WhatBlueBird (to be called U1 from here on) landed some big bets and romped home in both the overall and win div categories with $1727 (next best mango on $1260) and $712 (next best Suresh on $348) respectively.

And while the great man U1 would find plenty more big winners in months to come, April was the foundation to a big year as it was for Suresh who again topped the outright winners with 22 and Whip Hand who kept him honest with 20.

Did we say months to come in regards to U1?

We meant May, as the ‘wizard of odds’ raised the bar again by again smashing the opposition but some $560 in the overall divs and a staggering $598 in the win div category.

U1’s seven winners averaged $132 and obviously when you find the big ones so regularly, you will be hard to catch.

Pootoosamy was a fresh name on the honours board with his 13 winners topping the outright winners ladder with the pack making grounds on Suresh who - uncharacteristically - could only find eight.

June saw a much more competitive tipping month and it was the consistent Ronaldtao who just won the overall dividends ladder with $1432 over Robpayback with $1414, but Rob found the bigger winners and topped the win dividend table with $601 – some $200 in front of colcath.

Suresh bounced back with 16 winners to top the outright winners ladder in June and extended his lead at the halfway mark of the season with 82 wins over Whip Hand on 76 while UI has one hand on the other two trophys.

Cassvalue got on the board in July by topping both dividend tables (thanks to Michael Rodd having a big month) while Suresh improved on his lead in the win total with 17.

August was another good month for Suresh – who at this stage was even getting a few mentions on the TV coverage courtesy of Nick Childs – but he won nada at Kranjiracing with Mandamus clean sweeping the boards with 18 winners and plenty of cash.

And worth pointing out that no one tips earlier than Mandamus and he (or she) is always in the each-way mix.

September was a memorable month for Kranjiracing with 31 winners but alas while we almost doubled Cassvalue’s win total, that man Rodd rode some outsiders that saw Cassvalue top both dividend ladders.

If anyone had thoughts of pulling the proverbial punting rabbit out of the hat and catching U1, the long-shot wizard went ‘boom’ and extended his lead in both dividend tables in October.

Suresh was solid again with 16 wins but it was another very good tipster in Epsom who took the honours with 17 while a newcomer in Globalvac showed he will be a tipster to follow in 2019 with 16 wins.

November was the last full month of the tipping season and UI put the icing on the cake by winning the Overall and Win dividends ladders, while Epsom made it back-to-back wins in the Outright winners but had to share the spoils with Whip Hand and Mandamus.

When you’re hot, you’re hot and Epsom continued his golden run with his third straight outright winner gong and added the overall dividend December win to his mantelpiece, while U1 put an exclamation on his year by topping the win dividend table.

So without further ado, the yearly winners are…..

Overall Dividends Ladder;

U1WhatBlueBird $13,938 with honourable mentions to Suresh ($12,891), Mangocharlie ($12,755), Davidliew188 ($12,743) and Cassvalue on $12,411.

Win Dividend Ladder;

U1WhatBlueBird $4,622 with honourable mentions to Suresh ($3,594), Mangocharlie ($3,217), Davidliew188 ($3,201) and Mandamus on $$3,036.

Outright Winners Ladder;

Suresh 190 with honourable mentions to Whip Hand (188), Epsom (171), Mandamus (161) and Ronaldtao on 145.

Worth mentioning that Whip Hand did miss tipping seven races throughout the year and lost by only two but – just like real punting – if you haven’t got a ticket, you cant win.

At the track is was Lee Freedman who won the Trainer’s Premiership with Vlad Duric and Troy See winning the Jockey’s and Apprentice Titles respectively.

Congratulations to all concerned, enjoy the break and see you in 2019.
